Read the text before the choices

Read the text. Build a working understanding. Then judge the answer choices against the text. The order matters.

Central Ideas and Details

Identify the central idea of a short text, separate it from supporting details, and tell a true detail from one the text never states.

Inferences

Recognize the inference stem, predict the missing line in your own words before reading the choices, and separate a supported inference from an outside claim.

Command of Evidence — Textual

Read the claim before the text, then find the quotation that supports it directly — not one that is merely related.

Command of Evidence — Quantitative

Read the table's caption, labels, and headers first, translate the claim into the comparison the data would have to show, and choose the data point that supports it.

Words in Context

Predict a word's meaning from the sentence around it before reading the choices, and choose among close shades of meaning.

Text Structure and Purpose

Identify what a sentence is doing within a text and the purpose of the text as a whole — content versus function.

Lesson 8

Cross-Text Connections

Read two short texts, pin down each author's position, and predict how one would respond to the other: disagreement, qualification, extension, or an unrelated claim.

Lesson 9

Sentence Boundaries and End Punctuation

Recognize independent and dependent clauses, choose between period, semicolon, comma + conjunction, and attachment, and avoid comma splices and run-ons.

Lesson 10

Commas, Semicolons, Colons, and Dashes

Use each mark by its job: commas for lists and extra information, semicolons between complete sentences, colons before what follows, dashes in matched pairs.

Subject-Verb and Pronoun Agreement

Find the true subject when a modifier sits between subject and verb, and match every pronoun to its antecedent in number and case.

Lesson 12

Verbs, Modifiers, and Parallel Structure

Check that an opening phrase describes the subject that follows it, keep verb tense consistent, and give items in a list the same grammatical form.

Transitions

Name the relationship between two consecutive sentences, then choose the transition that signals exactly that relationship.

Rhetorical Synthesis

Read the student's goal carefully, then choose the option that uses the notes to accomplish it — and eliminate accurate choices that miss the goal.

Mixed sets across every domain, in test order. Identify the question type before you answer; review by type afterward.
